Utah Guard evacuating residents from flood zone
DESERET NEWS, by Leigh Dethman,September 4
Excerpt:
"A long line of refugees waited on the tarmac to board any plane to safety. The Utah Air National Guard picked up approximately 50 refugees Saturday night and early today, but the aircraft had not arrived in Utah by press time.
About 50 people were loaded onto a plane late Saturday, but when told they were going to Salt Lake City, nearly 20 people got off. 'There's nothing to do in Salt Lake City, nothing,' said Sandra Lawrence, 32, who stayed on the plane. Most of the people on board had thought they were going to Houston."
However, those who braved the trip are apparently getting along just fine...

Great photo of the family crossing the road.
i forwarded this to Stanislav as soon as i read your post. Everything has ben so unrelenting grim that this broke me out in a fit of laughter.
Am I so old that I'm the only one who remembers that they started life as the New Orleans Jazz?
Now you've got me started on my rant on why teams should have to abandon their nicknames when they abandon their cities, like they made the Cleveland Browns do. The Los Angeles Lakers? There are lakes in Minnesota, but not in LA. The Los Angeles Dodgers? There never were any trolley cars to dodge in LA. The Braves were named after the patriots who dressed up in Indian gear to throw the Boston Tea Party. So were the Redskins. What are teams with those names doing in Atlanta and Washington, respectively? The Utah Jazz is (are?) merely the worst example. Ever been to Salt Lake City? I have. It's a great town. But jazz clubs are not among its many charms. Now LA, the worst name thief in America (see above), has some great jazz places. The Lakers and the Jazz should swap names.
badger: i'm glad the post provided at least a momentary distraction.
jim: your suggestion re Lakers/Jazz switch is fantastic!
OMG! I can't belive 20 people got off the plane.
A close friend of mine works for a law enforcemnet agency in Salt Lake. He informs me that of 800 refugees brought to SLC, 40 are convicted felons; some with unresolved cases. Apparently one family refused to board the plane to SLC after pointing out a man (one of several gang members in the group) they said killed their daughter.
I know, I know, don't paint all refugees with the same brush, but I just can't help thinking
"Mariel Boatlift."
96 of the 800 or so people who arrived in SLC left today for other pastures--Denver, Tucson, etc. One guy said he just couldn't see himself living in Salt Lake City, the lifestyle was all wrong and not what he was used to. (Maybe he was the guy who killed that man's daughter).... They all left with a slug of money in their pockets, I suppose from the great state of Utah for relocation elsewhere.
Jim O'Sullivan, you are speaking from your ass. I can give you a list of at least 20 jazz clubs in and around Salt Lake City that not only host a thriving local jazz scene (SLAJO or Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra is one of the best jazz groups, I would argue, in the west) but world class musicians regularly play here and the Park City Jazz Festival is one of the premiere fastivals in the country. So get yer finger outta yer ass and boogie down!
The update on the Sandra Lawrence saga can be found in Monday's (Labor Day) edition of the DN. She's decided she LIKES SLC after all!
Don't forget about the Morman Jazzernackel Choir!
By the way, the "finger up yer [beep]remark was said with love, yo!
